Hattie Stoddard has been an artist and loved drawing since childhood. She has worked as a graphic artist before the age of computers and worked for newspapers doing paste-up and ad layout. She also owned a gift shop that featured her hand-made teddy bears and designed for LL Knickerbocker and Annette Funicello’s companies.
After retiring and moving to Santa Maria, Hattie took a Botanical Illustration watercolor class at Allan Hancock College. This started her love of watercolor painting studying under Sandra Kay Johnson and Marti Fast.
Hattie entered a painting of the Centennial Geranium contest. With this contest, it was required to sit in the art show that was held in the Town Center East Mall. This was the beginning for the Town Center Gallery that began as the Culture Corner Gallery. Culture Corner Gallery had been showing at the Veteran’s Memorial Building for over 20 years. With the help of Santa Maria Recreation & Parks, Hattie initiated the move with Lillian Felty as co-chairmen for six months. Hattie served as President for two more years and helped to make The Town Center Gallery a Non-Profit Organization.
Hattie was commissioned to design the Autumn Arts Grapes & Grains poster . She has been involved in painting two city murals with other volunteer artists from TC gallery. One was for Marion Hospital in a room in the Pediatric Ward. The other mural was for The Children’s Discovery Museum .
